The National Statistics Office has launched the nationwide field data collection for the ‘National Economic Census’ starting today (Baisakh 2). The campaign aims to provide a strong foundation for economic policymaking, planning, investment promotion, and employment analysis, and is described by officials as the “backbone” of national economic decision-making. According to Chief Statistician Dr. Kamal Prasad Pokhrel, census offices have been established across all 77 districts, with a total of 84 offices to cover all economic units including industries, trade, services, cooperatives, and both public and private enterprises. Diplomatic missions, security agencies, and household-only activities are excluded from the survey. In the previous census conducted in 2018, around 923,000 establishments and approximately 3.2 million jobs were recorded. The current field operation will continue until Asar 7, with preliminary reports expected at the beginning of the next fiscal year. The office has also introduced an ‘e-census’ system allowing businesses to submit data electronically.
