KATHMANDU — From Shrawan 1, a National Identity Number will be mandatory for opening a new demat (beneficiary) account. CDS and Clearing Limited has issued a notice introducing the requirement in line with its board of directors' decision of Jestha 13, saying the step is aimed at making the investor identification system in the capital market more organized and credible.

The rule is not confined to new accounts. Provisions have also been made requiring the national ID number to be included when updating the customer details (KYC) of demat accounts opened earlier. CDS has therefore urged investors not to wait for Shrawan — but to obtain their national ID number and complete the necessary updates beforehand.

The rationale is tied to the very growth of demat accounts. With account numbers rising markedly in recent years, CDS says the national identity system is being linked to the capital market with the aim of building a unified investor identification framework and curbing duplicate accounts and erroneous records. At a time when the number of investors connected to demat accounts, Mero Share and online trading keeps climbing, the policy makes the national ID number the basis for establishing each investor's exact identity.

The arrangement is expected to make the management of investor data more effective while strengthening transparency, credibility and regulatory oversight in the capital market, according to CDS.
