Nepal Exports 1,000 Megawatts of Electricity Daily — Rs. 15 Billion Earned So Far

Kathmandu — Nepal is currently exporting an average of 1,000 megawatts of electricity per day, according to Manoj Silwal, Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). Since the beginning of the current fiscal year 2082/83 (from mid-July), the country has earned approximately Rs. 15 billion from electricity exports.

The electricity is being sold in India through the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) under the Day-Ahead and Real-Time Market mechanisms at competitive rates. In addition, bilateral mid-term power sale agreements have enabled exports to the Indian states of Haryana and Bihar.

Nepal is also exporting 40 megawatts of electricity daily to Bangladesh using India’s power transmission infrastructure. The trade with India is conducted in Indian rupees (INR), while the export to Bangladesh is carried out in U.S. dollars (USD) — allowing Nepal to earn foreign currency in both denominations.

According to NEA, it has received approval to export up to 1,165 megawatts of electricity to India and Bangladesh combined.
