Nepal Reinsurance Company Limited, which is partly owned by the Nepal government, has reported a significant deterioration in its financial performance during the first nine months of the fiscal year. According to the company’s unaudited financial report, it recorded a net loss of Rs 5.84 billion by the end of Chaitra.
The company had posted a net profit of Rs 548.2 million during the same period of the previous fiscal year. However, a sharp rise in claim payments and a decline in income sources pushed the company into a heavy loss this year.
Although the company recorded a profit of Rs 2.14 billion in the third quarter alone, the impact of higher expenses in previous quarters resulted in an overall loss for the nine-month period.
The major factor behind the decline was the increase in net claim payments. The company’s net claim expenses surged from Rs 5.17 billion in the previous year to Rs 10.83 billion during the review period, creating significant pressure on profitability.
The company also faced a decline in investment income due to falling interest rates. Income from investments dropped from Rs 942.6 million to Rs 475.4 million. Meanwhile, net earned insurance premiums declined from Rs 7.11 billion to Rs 5.83 billion.
Following the loss, the company’s earnings per share (EPS) turned negative at Rs 43.51. Its accumulated reserve fund also moved into a negative position of Rs 4.90 billion, while net worth per share declined to Rs 109.20.
The company’s paid-up capital remains at Rs 13.42 billion. The latest financial results show that managing large insurance claims, improving investment returns and strengthening risk management have become major challenges for Nepal Reinsurance Company as it seeks to restore financial stability.
