नेपालकी पहिलो महिला राजदूत विन्दाश्वरी शाहको ९२ वर्षको उमेरमा बिहीबार बिहान निधन भएको छ।
वि.सं. १९८९ फागुन १ गते (सन् १९३३ फेब्रुअरी १३) भारतको दार्जिलिङस्थित कुर्सेङमा जन्मिएकी शाह पद्मसुन्दर मल्ल र जगतलक्ष्मी मल्लकी छोरी थिइन्। उनका पिता जापान र अमेरिका अध्ययन गर्न गएको कारण राणा प्रधानमन्त्रीले परिवारलाई देश निकाला गरेका थिए।
सन् १९५६ मा कोलम्बिया विश्वविद्यालय अन्तर्गतको बार्नार्ड कलेजबाट लिबरल आर्ट्समा स्नातक गर्ने पहिलो नेपाली महिला बनेकी शाहले १९५८ मा अमेरिकाको जोन हप्किन्स विश्वविद्यालयबाट अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय मामिलामा स्नातकोत्तर उपाधि हासिल गरेकी थिइन्।
शाहले सन् १९५९ मा लोकसेवा आयोगको परीक्षा पास गरी परराष्ट्र मन्त्रालयमा आफ्नो सेवा यात्रा सुरु गरेकी थिइन्। सन् १९८८ देखि १९९१ सम्म उनले भारतका लागि नेपाली राजदूतको रूपमा कार्य गरिन्। ढाकास्थित नेपाली दूतावास स्थापना गर्दै बंगलादेशसँगको कूटनीतिक सम्बन्ध स्थापनामा समेत उनले योगदान पुर्याएकी थिइन्।
शाहले नेपालको परराष्ट्र नीतिलाई बलियो बनाउन तीन दशकभन्दा बढी समय योगदान दिइन्। उनी अमेरिकी कलेजबाट स्नातक गर्ने पहिलो नेपाली महिला समेत हुन्।
शाहका जेठा सुपुत्र अनिल केशरी शाह पूर्व बैंकर र हाल राष्ट्रिय स्वतन्त्र पार्टीका नेता हुन्। उनका कान्छा सुपुत्र स्व. उज्जल केशरी शाह हुन्।
नेपालको कूटनीति क्षेत्रमा शाहको योगदान अमूल्य मानिन्छ। उनका योगदानले नेपालको परराष्ट्र सम्बन्धलाई मजबुत बनाएको छ।
Bindashree Shah, Nepal's first female ambassador, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 92.
Born on February 13, 1933 (Falgun 1, 1989 BS) in Kurseong, Darjeeling, India, Shah was the daughter of Padmasundar Mall and Jagatlakshmi Mall. Her father’s studies in Japan and the United States led to the family’s exile by the Rana Prime Minister of Nepal.
Shah became the first Nepali woman to graduate from Barnard College of Columbia University in 1956 with a degree in Liberal Arts. She earned her master’s degree in International Affairs in 1958 from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies.
She began her career in 1959 by passing the Public Service Commission exam and joining Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Shah served as Nepal’s Ambassador to India from 1988 to 1991. She also played a key role in establishing diplomatic relations with Bangladesh and setting up the Nepali Embassy in Dhaka.
Shah was the first Nepali woman to graduate from an American college and spent over three decades strengthening Nepal’s foreign policy.
She was married to Dr. Narayan Keshari Shah in 1966, and they had two sons: Anil Keshari Shah, a former banker and current leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, and the late Ujjwal Keshari Shah.
Shah's contributions to Nepal’s diplomacy and international relations are considered invaluable, leaving a lasting legacy in Nepal’s foreign affairs.
