The Bikram Sambat New Year 2083 has officially begun today. On the first day of the year, people across the country are celebrating with enthusiasm and happiness. From early morning, individuals have been exchanging शुभकामना (best wishes) with family members, relatives, and friends, marking the start of the new year with positivity and hope.Baisakh 1 is observed as the first day of the year based on the solar calendar. On this day, the sun transitions from Pisces to Aries, a phenomenon known as Mesh Sankranti. This astronomical movement is considered the basis for the beginning of the new year, and scholars regard the Bikram Sambat calendar as systematic and scientifically grounded due to its alignment with the sun’s motion.Historically, the Bikram Sambat calendar has been in use since ancient times. Although its widespread documentation is traced back to around the 12th century, it has long been a fundamental part of Nepalese timekeeping. The calendar uniquely integrates both solar and lunar systems, making it culturally and scientifically significant.The first day of the new year is also seen as a time for reflection and renewal. Many people take this opportunity to evaluate their successes and failures from the past year and set new goals and resolutions for the future. Traditional practices such as early morning bathing, cleaning homes and surroundings, visiting temples for पूजा (worship), and enjoying festive meals are widely observed.On the occasion of the New Year, the government has declared a public holiday across the country, including in government offices, public institutions, and educational establishments. Nepali communities living abroad are also celebrating the beginning of the new year in their own ways, continuing to preserve and promote their cultural identity worldwide.
