NPR 255.61 Billion Remains in Government Accounts

As of the first two months of the current fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26), the Government of Nepal holds NPR 255.61 billion across various accounts, including those of provincial and local governments, according to the latest data from Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB). By the end of the previous fiscal year (mid-July 2025), this amount was NPR 130.73 billion, showing a significant increase in the government’s cash balance within just two months.

According to the Office of the Financial Comptroller General (OFCG) under the Ministry of Finance, the total government expenditure during the same review period reached NPR 180.17 billion.
The breakdown is as follows:

  • Current expenditure: NPR 114.19 billion

  • Capital expenditure: NPR 6.35 billion

  • Financial management expenditure: NPR 59.63 billion

Meanwhile, the government’s total revenue mobilization (including the shares distributed to provincial and local governments) reached NPR 157.53 billion. Of this, tax revenue accounted for NPR 150.40 billion, and non-tax revenue amounted to NPR 7.13 billion.

Economic analysts suggest that the sharp rise in the government’s cash balance is mainly due to slow expenditure execution and a relatively better pace of revenue collection. However, the sluggish capital expenditure continues to limit the expected momentum in economic activities.
