Only 89.4% of Current Fiscal Year's Budget Expected to Be Spent: Government's Revised Estimate

Kathmandu, May 29 – The Government of Nepal has revised its estimate, stating that only 89.4% of the total allocated budget for the current fiscal year 2081/82 is likely to be spent. The updated projection was presented by Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel while unveiling the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2082/83.

For the current year, the government had announced a budget of NPR 1.86 trillion (18 Kharba 60 Arba). However, spending is now expected to be limited to NPR 1.662 trillion (16 Kharba 62 Arba).

Sector-wise Spending Estimates:

  • Recurrent (Operational) Expenditure: 88.5%

  • Capital Expenditure: 83%

  • Financial Management (Debt servicing, etc.): 97.6%

Additionally, Finance Minister Paudel projected that revenue mobilization will grow by 17.1% in the current fiscal year.

While capital expenditure continues to lag—raising concerns about implementation efficiency—the high financial management spending is expected to offer some fiscal balance. The government has committed to improving budget execution capacity in the upcoming fiscal year.
