Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Halts Power Generation After Flood Risk Rises
The 111-megawatt Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project has suspended electricity generation as a precautionary measure after water levels increased and muddy floodwaters began flowing in the Lhende River of Rasuwa on Sunday evening.
Project officials said the decision was taken to prevent possible damage to the infrastructure. Project chief Santosh Adhikari said power generation would resume once the river condition becomes normal.
The project had suffered major damage last year after floods in the Lhende River affected its dam and other structures. Following repairs and reconstruction, authorities decided to take additional precautions this time by closing the gate that supplies water to the tunnel system.
Meanwhile, rising water levels in the Bhotekoshi River also created concerns in the Rasuwagadhi border area. Cargo trucks and newly imported vehicles parked at the customs yard were moved to safer locations as a precaution.
Local authorities have urged residents to avoid areas near the Lhende River and Bhotekoshi River and requested drivers not to park vehicles near riverbanks. The administration has also advised travellers to use safer alternative routes due to increased risks along some road sections.
Officials said continuous monitoring of rivers and weather conditions is underway. With heavy rainfall continuing in the region, authorities have called on the public to remain alert and take necessary safety measures.
