RSP Government Faces Internal Tensions as PM Shah and Finance Minister Wagle Differ Over Policies
Differences within the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP)-led government appear to be widening as Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle reportedly face disagreements over government operations, economic policies and decision-making processes.
Amid growing speculation about tensions between the two leaders, RSP Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane has started efforts to facilitate dialogue and prevent the dispute from affecting the government’s stability. Lamichhane and Prime Minister Shah reportedly held a four-hour meeting on Sunday to discuss the emerging challenges.
According to sources, the meeting covered issues including coordination between the party and government, public dissatisfaction, economic decisions and the role of Finance Minister Wagle. Lamichhane is believed to have encouraged resolving differences through discussion rather than immediate political decisions.
Sources claim Prime Minister Shah expressed concerns over some aspects of budget preparation and tax policy changes. However, allegations that certain decisions benefited specific interest groups have not been independently verified, and no official response has been issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The possibility of changing the finance minister’s role was reportedly discussed during the meeting. However, Lamichhane is said to have warned that an immediate leadership change at the Finance Ministry could create uncertainty for the government, the party and the economic sector.
Wagle’s side has reportedly raised concerns over insufficient coordination in economic decision-making and the need to maintain the institutional role of the Finance Ministry. Meanwhile, the prime minister’s side believes stronger coordination between the ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office is necessary.
Political observers view the disagreement as more than a personal dispute, describing it as a difference in approach between political leadership, administrative control and economic policymaking.
The relationship between RSP’s three key figures — Lamichhane as party chair, Shah as head of government and Wagle as the face of economic policy — is expected to play an important role in determining the future direction and stability of the government.
