U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the planned summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, expected to take place later this month, is no longer necessary, accusing Beijing of becoming “increasingly hostile.”

In a message posted on his own social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Strange things are happening in China. They are becoming very hostile.” He added, “I was scheduled to meet President Xi in South Korea during the APEC summit in two weeks, but I see no reason to do so now.”

Trump’s remarks come after China announced export controls on rare earth minerals, a critical component used in manufacturing smartphones, electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, and military equipment.

Calling China’s move a global threat, Trump said, “There’s no point in allowing China to hold the world hostage — but that seems to be their plan.”

He further revealed that his administration is preparing to impose significant tariff hikes on Chinese imports, saying, “We are now implementing a major increase in tariffs on goods entering the United States from China.”

Trump also noted that several other countries have contacted the United States regarding China’s “massive trade hostility,” stressing that Washington “cannot turn a blind eye” to Beijing’s behavior. He clarified that he has not directly spoken to President Xi about the matter, describing China’s approach to monopolizing magnets and other critical elements as “a dangerous and hostile act.”

China plays a dominant role in the global production and processing of rare earth elements. Analysts warn that its new export restrictions could have major implications for the global technology and energy industries.
