Uber Begins Process to Enter Nepal with Joint Venture Investment
American ride-sharing company Uber has started the process of entering the Nepali market by submitting a foreign investment proposal to Nepal’s Department of Industry.
According to sources, Uber has proposed an investment of NPR 20 million, while Nepali investors will contribute NPR 8.5 million under a joint venture model. The company is expected to expand its services in Nepal with a total investment of NPR 28.5 million.
Under Nepal’s Foreign Investment and Technology Transfer Act, 2019 (2075 BS), foreign investors are not allowed to invest more than 70 percent in ride-sharing platforms. The law also requires at least 30 percent Nepali ownership in such businesses.
Nepal currently has foreign ride-sharing platforms including Pathao, inDrive, and Yango operating in the market. If Uber officially launches in Nepal, competition in the ride-sharing sector is expected to intensify, which experts believe could lead to lower fares and improved service quality for consumers.
