China Tourist Visa Fees, Duration & Embassy Process

In 2025, China has made the visa process much easier and more affordable for Nepali travelers by introducing a visa fee exemption policy for ordinary tourists. According to the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepali citizens applying for a regular tourist visa (L Visa) are not required to pay the standard visa fee. This decision was implemented to strengthen Nepal-China bilateral relations and encourage more travel and cultural exchange between the two countries. However, although the visa itself is free, travelers must still pay service charges and optional express fees to the Chinese Visa Application Service Center in Kathmandu.

Under the current system, the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) at Rising Mall, Kamaladi, Kathmandu handles all visa-related operations. For regular processing, the China Tourist Visa is usually issued within 4 working days, provided all documents are accurate and complete. For travelers in a hurry, express service (3 working days) and urgent/rush service (2 working days) options are available with additional service fees, typically ranging between NPR 2,700 and NPR 4,000, depending on urgency and service type. These extra fees cover handling, coordination, and document verification by the visa center.

Applicants must still follow the full embassy process despite the fee exemption. The process begins by filling out the online visa application form on visaforchina.cn. Once completed, applicants print the form and physically submit it with the required documents—such as a valid passport, recent photograph, flight booking, hotel confirmation, and financial proof—at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center. Submission hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and collection hours are 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Embassy and Visa Center remain closed during both Nepali and Chinese public holidays, so it’s best to plan ahead and submit the application at least 7–10 working days before travel.

Once submitted, the Chinese Embassy reviews all documents carefully and may request additional evidence for verification. After approval, the visa is stamped on the applicant’s passport and returned through the visa center. While the visa fee itself is waived, travelers must pay handling and express charges directly at the service counter. This waiver applies primarily to regular single-entry tourist visas, while business, work, and student visas may still require standard payments.

The China Tourist Visa (L Visa) typically allows a stay of up to 30 days per visit and is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. In some cases, multiple-entry visas may be granted for frequent travelers who meet specific requirements. Nepali travelers planning to visit Tibet or travel via Kathmandu–Lhasa overland routes must also obtain special Group Visas and Tibet Travel Permits through an authorized travel agency.
