Hong Kong Invitation Visa Process for Nepali Citizens – Step-by-Step Guide

Nepali citizens who are invited to visit the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) for family, business, conference, or official purposes must apply for a Visit or Invitation Visa before traveling. Nepal is not listed among the visa-exempt countries for Hong Kong, meaning every Nepali traveler requires prior visa approval from the Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) before entering. The department offers an official online application system through which applicants can upload all required documents and receive an e-Visa upon approval.

According to the official guidelines, an invitation visa (technically a Visit Visa with Sponsor/Invitation) can be approved if the applicant’s identity and purpose of visit are genuine, they have enough financial means to cover their expenses during their stay without employment, and they hold a return or onward ticket. The Immigration Department ensures that applicants meet the standard immigration requirements, such as having a valid passport, no criminal record, and no intention to overstay.

Applicants must first obtain an invitation letter from the person, company, or institution in Hong Kong who is inviting them. The invitation letter should clearly mention the applicant’s full name, passport number, purpose of visit, relationship (if family-related), conference or meeting details (if applicable), duration of stay, and accommodation arrangements.

Applicants are then required to prepare and upload supporting documents, including a valid passport (minimum six-month validity), a recent passport-size photograph, a completed visa application form (ID 1003A), and a sponsor form (ID 1003B) if a local sponsor exists. They must also include a bank statement showing sufficient financial means, a round-trip flight ticket, and hotel booking confirmation (or proof of accommodation by the inviter).

All documents must be uploaded in JPEG, PDF, GIF, PNG, or TIF format, and each file must not exceed 5 MB. Once submitted, applicants receive an acknowledgment email within seven working days, and the normal processing time is about four weeks after all required documents are received.

If approved, the Immigration Department sends a notification email containing a secure payment link. Payment can be made through GovHK, FPS, PPS, or credit card, after which the applicant can download or print their e-Visa on A4 paper. Travelers must carry both the passport and the e-Visa (digital or printed) while arriving at Hong Kong Immigration, where the QR code on the e-Visa is scanned for entry clearance.

Applicants can also apply by post or through the nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate, but the online process is faster and more efficient.

Local Sponsor Rules

The local sponsor must be a Hong Kong resident aged 18 or above or a registered company/organization in Hong Kong. The sponsor assists in verifying the applicant’s visit purpose, provides proof of relationship or business link, and guarantees that the visitor will comply with Hong Kong’s visa rules.
