Hong Kong Visa on Arrival for Nepalese — Myth or Reality?

Nepalese citizens cannot get a Hong Kong visa on arrival. They must apply for a Visit or Transit Visa before traveling, as Nepal is not included in the visa-free or visa-on-arrival list. All applications must be made in advance via the Immigration Department’s e-Visa portal or the Chinese Embassy. Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd. provides expert visa processing, documentation, and support for all types of Hong Kong visas.

Hong Kong Visa on Arrival for Nepalese — Myth or Reality?

Many Nepali travelers are often confused by rumors and social media posts claiming that they can get a Hong Kong visa on arrival for short visits or transit purposes. However, according to the official Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD), this belief is a myth, not reality. As of 2025, Nepal is not among the countries eligible for visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival access to Hong Kong. Citizens of around 170 countries and territories — such as Japan, Singapore, the USA, and most of Europe — can visit Hong Kong without a visa for a limited number of days ranging from 7 to 180, but Nepali passport holders are not included in this list. This means that every Nepali traveler, regardless of the length or purpose of stay, must apply for a Visit Visa or Entry Permit before traveling.

The Hong Kong Immigration Department clearly states that all visa-required nationals must obtain a visa prior to arrival, and airlines are instructed not to allow boarding to travelers without valid entry permits. Therefore, if a Nepali citizen attempts to travel to Hong Kong without a visa, they will likely be denied boarding or entry. The correct process is to apply for a Visit / Transit Visa (Form ID 1003A) via the official Hong Kong e-Visa portal or through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. For sponsored trips, a local host or business partner in Hong Kong must also submit Form ID 1003B along with the necessary invitation letter, identity proof, and financial documents.

The visa approval process generally takes 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the applicant’s profile and the completeness of their documentation. Once approved, travelers receive an electronic visa (e-Visa) via email, which must be printed and presented upon arrival in Hong Kong. Those attempting to travel without prior approval, hoping to secure a visa on arrival, will be refused entry.

The confusion around “visa on arrival” often comes from misunderstandings related to transit exemptions. For example, travelers of certain nationalities transiting through Hong Kong Airport for under 24 hours and not leaving the international transit area do not require a visa. However, Nepali citizens do not fall under this category, meaning they also need a visa even for transits that involve leaving the restricted airport area.

To ensure smooth travel and avoid last-minute issues, it is always recommended to apply for your Hong Kong visa well in advance and through reliable agencies. Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., one of Nepal’s top travel and visa processing companies, provides complete assistance for Hong Kong Visit, Transit, and Business visas. The company helps travelers prepare all required documents, coordinate with the Hong Kong Immigration Department, and obtain e-Visa approvals quickly and safely. Yatra For Fun also supports Nepali citizens residing abroad in countries like Australia, Japan, and Europe, offering complete online coordination and submission support.
