How to Apply Online for Hong Kong Visit or Transit Visa

The Hong Kong online visa application system enables travelers to apply for a Visit or Transit Visa electronically. Applicants must provide valid documents, meet eligibility requirements, and upload their materials in approved formats. The entire process takes about four weeks, and approved applicants receive an e-Visa that can be printed or stored digitally for entry. Payments are made securely online, and inquiries can be directed to the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

How to Apply Online for Hong Kong Visit or Transit Visa

Applying for a Hong Kong Visit or Transit Visa online is a convenient and efficient process managed by the Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). This online service allows eligible applicants to submit their visa or entry permit applications electronically without visiting an embassy or immigration office. However, it is important to note that the online service does not apply to visa extensions.

To use the service, travelers who do not enjoy visa-free entry to Hong Kong or wish to stay beyond their visa-free period must apply in advance. Applicants must ensure their nationality requires a visa by checking the official “Visit Visa / Entry Permit Requirements for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region” webpage. This service excludes Chinese residents of the Mainland and Taiwan, except for holders of PRC passports and overseas Taiwanese residents.

An application is likely to be approved if the applicant’s credentials are genuine, they have sufficient funds to cover their stay without working, and if applying for a transit visa, they possess a valid onward ticket (unless traveling to Mainland China or Macao). Additionally, applicants must hold a valid travel document, have no criminal record, and not pose any financial or security threat to Hong Kong.

Having a local sponsor is optional but recommended. A sponsor can be an individual or a company based in Hong Kong. If an individual acts as the sponsor, they must be a Hong Kong resident over 18 years old who personally knows the applicant. The sponsor helps in facilitating communication and supporting the visa approval process.

Applicants must prepare and upload necessary documents, such as:

  • A copy of their passport,

  • Proof of accommodation,

  • Travel itinerary,

  • Financial statements,

  • Employment or business documents (if applicable).
All documents must be uploaded in JPEG, PDF, GIF, PNG, or TIF format, each file not exceeding 5 MB. For documents containing photos, color scans are preferred, while grayscale is acceptable for those without images.

After submission, applicants usually receive an acknowledgment email within seven working days. The processing period typically takes around four weeks once all required documents are received. If no response is received after ten working days, applicants can contact the Immigration Department through the hotline (852) 2824 6111 or via email at [email protected].

When the visa is approved, applicants receive a notification email with a payment link. Payment can be made through credit cards, PPS, or Faster Payment System (FPS) via the GovHK website or the ImmD mobile application. Once the payment is completed, applicants can instantly download or print their “e-Visa”. Those visiting the office in person may pay through cash, EPS, Octopus, FPS, or cheque. The “e-Visa” will be printed on A4 paper or can be downloaded digitally.

Upon arrival in Hong Kong, travelers must present their valid passport and the “e-Visa” (either printed or saved on a mobile device). Immigration officers will scan the encrypted QR code on the “e-Visa” to grant entry.

For applicants unable to apply online, submissions can also be made by post, through Chinese diplomatic and consular missions abroad, or at the Immigration Divisions of the Hong Kong Beijing Office or Shanghai Economic and Trade Office. To speed up the process, forms can first be faxed, but original documents must later be mailed.

For best online experience, users should ensure their systems meet technical requirements—using updated browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari, enabling JavaScript and Cookies, and allowing pop-ups. If the message “System Busy” appears, it usually indicates server maintenance or high user traffic. There is no additional surchargefor applying online.

Overall, the Hong Kong Visit or Transit Visa online application system is designed to simplify the visa process, offering applicants a fast, transparent, and secure way to obtain travel authorization.
