Japan Medical Visa Process for Nepali Citizens — Detailed Guide on Documents & Online

The Japan Medical Treatment Visa (Medical Stay Visa / 医療滞在ビザ) allows Nepali citizens to travel to Japan for medical treatment, health check-ups, advanced surgery, or specialized healthcare procedures. Japan has one of the world’s most technologically advanced healthcare systems, with renowned hospitals offering treatments for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, organ transplants, orthopedic surgeries, and neurological conditions. Many Nepali patients choose Japan for its precision-based diagnosis, modern equipment, and professional patient care standards.
To apply for the Japan Medical Visa from Nepal, the applicant must first identify a recognized hospital or clinic in Japan that provides the required treatment. The hospital reviews the patient’s medical report and issues an official Invitation Letter, which clearly states the purpose of the visit, medical diagnosis, treatment duration, and estimated cost. This letter is a mandatory document and acts as proof that the hospital is prepared to accept the patient for medical treatment.
After receiving the invitation, the patient must collect and prepare the following documents in Nepal:
Valid Passport (at least 6 months validity) and recent passport-size photograph (45×35 mm)
Visa Application Form (available on VFS Japan’s website)
Hospital Invitation Letter from Japan
Letter of Guarantee (if the hospital or sponsor bears any cost)
Doctor’s Recommendation Letter from Nepal explaining the need for foreign treatment
Bank Statement (6 months), Bank Balance Certificate, and Income Proof
Employment or Business Certificate (for working/self-employed individuals)
Certificate of Eligibility (COE) if the treatment exceeds 90 days
Relationship Certificate if accompanied by a caretaker or family member
Once all documents are ready, the applicant must visit the VFS Japan Visa Application Centre located at Chhaya Center, Thamel. VFS verifies the documents, collects the official visa fee and service charge, and forwards the application to the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu for evaluation. The visa fee for Nepali applicants in 2025 is NPR 2,680 for single entry and NPR 5,360 for multiple entry, with an additional VFS service charge of NPR 2,083 (non-refundable).
The processing time for the Japan Medical Visa is typically 5–7 working days, depending on the completeness of documents and embassy workload. If the embassy requires additional verification, especially regarding hospital confirmation or financial capacity, it may take up to 3–4 weeks. Therefore, applicants are strongly advised to apply at least 3 weeks before their planned travel date.
Regarding the Japan e-Visa system, Japan has begun introducing digital visa applications in several countries. Although Nepal is not yet included, the system may soon expand to Nepali applicants. Once available, applicants will be able to upload all documents, including hospital invitations and financial proofs, through the official Japan e-Visa Portal for faster processing. Until then, physical submission through VFS remains mandatory.
Upon visa approval, the patient and caretaker can travel to Japan. Immigration officers at the airport may ask for original copies of the hospital invitation, treatment plan, and proof of return flight. It is crucial to carry all official papers to ensure smooth entry. During the stay, all expenses must be fully covered by the patient or sponsor since foreign patients under a medical visa are not eligible for Japan’s public health insurance.
