Japan Transit Visa – Validity, Conditions & Processing Time

A Japan Transit Visa for Nepali travelers allows up to 15 days of stay and is valid for 3 months from issue date. It is strictly for short transits, airport transfers, or layovers — not for tourism or work. The processing time is 5 working days, so applying early through VFS Japan Kathmandu is crucial. Professional support from Yatra for Fun Pvt. Ltd. ensures smooth documentation and approval.

Japan Transit Visa – Validity, Conditions & Processing Time

For Nepali citizens traveling through Japan en route to another country, understanding the validity, conditions, and processing time of the Japan Transit Visa is essential to ensure a smooth journey. Since Nepal is not included in Japan’s visa-free transit list, most travelers are required to obtain a transit visa in advance if their flight involves entering or changing terminals in Japan.

A Japan Transit Visa is typically issued for a short duration of stay — up to 15 days maximum. It is valid for three months from the date of issue, meaning you must enter Japan within that period. The visa is single-entry in most cases, but under certain conditions, a double-entry visa may be granted (for example, if you need to transit twice within the same journey). Importantly, this visa cannot be extended or converted to another category; it is strictly for transit or connecting travel purposes only.

While holding a Japan Transit Visa, you are permitted to stay in Japan only for transit-related purposes — such as changing airports, catching your next flight, or staying for a brief rest. You are not allowed to work, study, or engage in any business activity. Travelers who do not leave the international transit zone generally don’t need a visa, but if you must pass through immigration — for example, to collect baggage, change terminals, or transfer between Haneda ↔ Narita or Kansai ↔ Itami airports — a transit visa is mandatory.

To be eligible, you must have a confirmed onward flight within 72 hours of arrival in Japan, along with a valid visa for your destination country (if required). Your luggage should ideally be checked through to your final destination to avoid re-entry procedures. It’s also crucial to carry a cover letter describing your travel plan and reason for transit.

The standard processing time for a Japan Transit Visa is five working days, counted from the day after VFS Japan accepts your application. However, delays can occur if additional verification or documents are required, so it’s recommended to apply at least two weeks before your scheduled departure. There is no priority or express service available for Nepali travelers, as all applications are handled uniformly by the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu.

Applications must be submitted through the VFS Japan Visa Application Centre, located at Chhaya Center, Thamel, Kathmandu. You will need:

  • A valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)

  • Visa application form

  • Flight itinerary and valid visa for destination country

  • Recent photo (2x2 inches)

  • Cover letter stating travel details

  • Visa fee around ¥700 (approx. NPR 600) plus VFS service charge (NPR 1,000–2,000).

If you need expert help with your transit visa documents, Yatra for Fun Pvt. Ltd., located at Koteshwor-32, Kathmandu, offers full guidance for Japan Transit Visa processing — including documentation, translation, itinerary review, and VFS submission support.
