Nepal Electricity Authority to Be Split into Three Separate Companies

Kathmandu — The long-pending restructuring of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) will be completed, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle announced through the budget.

Wagle said the NEA will be divided into three separate companies — for electricity generation, transmission and distribution, and trade.

The government will scrap the licences of projects that have signed power purchase agreements but have not begun construction, and make arrangements for new PPAs under the "take or pay" method.

The Finance Minister said power projects with a capacity of less than ten megawatts will get immediate PPAs.

He also said arrangements will be made to sign purchase agreements by setting a fluctuating electricity purchase rate during the dry season.
