Thailand Transit Visa Validity & Conditions

The Thailand Transit Visa (TS) is a short-term visa designed for travelers who need to pass through Thailand on their way to another country. For Nepali citizens, this visa becomes necessary if they have a layover exceeding 12 hours, if they must leave the airport transit area, or if they are traveling with separate flight tickets requiring re-check-in or terminal transfer. The visa is also used by athletes, crew members, and passengers making brief stops in Thailand for transit or official travel purposes.

The validity period of the Thailand Transit Visa is 90 days from the date of issuance, meaning the visa holder must enter Thailand within this timeframe. Once they arrive, they can stay for up to 30 days per entry. This short-term stay allows travelers to rest, collect baggage, or prepare for the next flight without needing a longer visa type. For travelers who plan to pass through Thailand multiple times within a few months, a multiple-entry transit visa is recommended. It allows several entries within the 90-day validity, each time permitting a 30-day stay.

Applicants must comply with several key conditions while using this visa. They must hold a confirmed onward ticketto a third country within 30 days of entry and possess sufficient financial means — at least THB 10,000 per person or THB 20,000 per family. Travelers are not permitted to work, conduct business, or seek employment while on a transit visa. The visa holder must leave Thailand within the authorized duration; overstaying can lead to fines or future entry restrictions. Additionally, the transit visa cannot be changed into another visa type (such as a tourist or medical visa) while inside Thailand.

When applying for a Thailand Transit Visa through the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepali citizens need to submit a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity), a completed visa application form, two passport-sized photographs, a confirmed airline ticket showing entry and onward departure, financial proof (such as a bank statement or solvency certificate), and, if required, a visa for the next destination country. The visa fee is paid through a Manager’s Cheque issued by Global IME Bank, payable to “The Royal Thai Embassy, Kathmandu.” The standard processing time ranges from 5 to 7 working days, but applicants are advised to apply at least two weeks before their intended travel date.

The Thailand Transit Visa offers flexibility for travelers connecting to long-haul destinations such as Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, or Australia via Bangkok. It ensures a legal and smooth stay during extended layovers or while transferring between airports. To make the process easier, Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., one of Nepal’s best travel and visa service providers, offers full guidance — from document preparation and embassy submission to ensuring eligibility based on your flight details.
