Kathmandu: The Nepal Police has urged the general public to remain vigilant against fraudulent schemes operating under the guise of networking businesses and lucrative online jobs via social media and other digital platforms. Issuing a public notice, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) warned citizens not to fall for deceptive advertisements and promises of 'unnatural profits.'
According to the CIB, scammers have increasingly been using pyramid-style networking structures, luring people with promises of high financial returns for recruiting new members. Additionally, fraudsters are tricking victims by claiming a valuable 'parcel' has arrived from abroad, subsequently extorting money under the pretext of customs clearance fees. Scams promising substantial income for simple online or IT-related work from home are also on the rise, often used as a tactic to harvest sensitive personal and financial data.
More alarmingly, the police highlighted that some of these fake employment or training offers are fronts for human trafficking. Victims are lured to foreign countries where their passports and mobile phones are confiscated. They are then held hostage, subjected to physical and mental abuse, and forced to participate in organized 'online scamming' operations against their will.
To avoid falling victim to these traps, the police advise the public never to open suspicious links sent by strangers, share OTPs or sensitive banking details, or make hasty financial decisions. The CIB strongly urges citizens to thoroughly verify the legal registration and licensing of any company before making investments.
"Do not invest money without verifying the facts; protect yourself and help protect others," the CIB appealed. The police have requested anyone who suspects a scam or has been victimized to immediately file a complaint with supporting evidence at the nearest police station. The authorities warned that perpetrators will face strict legal action under organized crime, cybercrime, and anti-money laundering laws.
