The new government led by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which is preparing to take office from March 26 (Chaitra 13), is set to prioritize the energy sector as the backbone of the national economy. Under the proposed leadership of Balen Shah, the government has set an ambitious target of increasing Nepal’s total installed electricity capacity to 15,000 MW within the next five years and 30,000 MW within the next decade. With the current installed capacity standing at around 3,200–4,000 MW, experts estimate that an investment of Rs 1.8 trillion to Rs 2.4 trillion will be required to add another 12,000 MW in five years. The government plans to introduce a single-window system to remove administrative hurdles, accelerate transmission line construction, reopen stalled power purchase agreements (PPAs), and attract both domestic and foreign investment. It also plans to export surplus electricity to India and Bangladesh once the production target is achieved.
