Company reports Rs 63.7 million net profit in first quarter of FY 2083/84
KATHMANDU: Terhathum Power Company Limited posted a net profit of Rs 63.7 million in the first quarter of the current fiscal year 2083/84. That is about 13 percent more than the Rs 56.2 million it earned in the same period last year.
According to its unaudited financial statements for the quarter ending Ashoj 31, the company earned Rs 84.7 million from electricity sales, only about 3 percent more than a year earlier. The rise in profit came mainly from lower interest payments rather than higher income.
Finance cost fell to Rs 4.7 million from Rs 10.3 million a year ago as the company repaid part of its debt. Long-term borrowings dropped by about Rs 101 million over the year to Rs 264 million, while total liabilities shrank from Rs 417 million to Rs 328 million.
Annualized earnings per share rose to Rs 31.85 from Rs 28.12, and net worth per share improved to Rs 111.57 from Rs 99.61. The price-to-earnings ratio stands at 11.41.
During the quarter, the company’s shares traded between Rs 336.30 and Rs 388.50 and closed at Rs 363.50. Over 61 trading days, 879,258 shares changed hands in 3,958 transactions, with total turnover of about Rs 317 million.
The company sells power from its 7.5 MW Upper Khorunga Khola small hydropower project to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) on a take-and-pay basis. The project began commercial operation on Falgun 17, 2076. Once it meets the conditions set by the NEA, the company will become eligible for a take-or-pay arrangement.
The company named low rainfall and prolonged dry spells, which reduce river flow, as its main risk. It also cited fluctuations in interest rates, delays in approvals for its new project, and maintenance challenges due to its geographical location. It added that the figures may change after the statutory audit.
