Herb Exports Surge 69%: Traditional Medicine Sector Boosts Nepal’s Overseas Trade

Nepal’s herb exports surged by 69% in FY 2025/26, emerging as one of the few bright spots in the country’s foreign trade profile. According to NRB data, herbs worth Rs. 154.2 million were exported in a single month, compared to Rs. 91.3 million during the same period last year. This sharp rise highlights the growing international demand for Nepal’s medicinal plants, which are increasingly valued in traditional medicine, Ayurveda, and modern pharmaceutical industries.

While exports to India and other markets expanded, herbs also contributed to diversifying Nepal’s export basket at a time when several traditional commodities such as woolen carpets, handicrafts, and tea have witnessed steep declines. The strong performance of herbs not only supports foreign currency earnings but also provides opportunities for rural farmers and collectors engaged in Himalayan herbal trade.

However, experts caution that without sustainable harvesting, certification, and branding, Nepal risks losing long-term competitiveness in this niche sector. Strengthening supply chains, promoting organic certification, and supporting value-added processing could further enhance earnings.
