Commercial Banks Post Strong Recovery as Profits Cross NPR 49 Billion in Q3

Kathmandu — Nepal’s commercial banking sector has shown a clear and encouraging recovery in the third quarter of the current fiscal year 2082/83, with total net profit of 20 commercial banks crossing NPR 49.21 billion. This marks a solid 19.30 percent increase compared to NPR 41.25 billion recorded during the same period last year, signaling renewed momentum in the financial sector.

In terms of absolute profitability, Nabil Bank has maintained its leadership position, earning over NPR 6.76 billion in net profit. It is followed by Global IME Bank with NPR 4.40 billion and Kumari Bank with NPR 4.17 billion. Notably, Kumari Bank has emerged as the most improved institution this quarter, recording an extraordinary growth of over 1361 percent, indicating a strong financial turnaround and improved operational performance.

Rastriya Banijya Bank has also delivered an impressive performance, posting NPR 2.76 billion in profit with a growth rate of over 129 percent. Other major contributors include Everest Bank (NPR 3.32 billion), Prime Commercial Bank (NPR 3.08 billion), and Nepal Investment Mega Bank (NPR 3.14 billion), all of which have maintained strong earnings and contributed significantly to the sector’s overall profit.

Mid-sized banks have also demonstrated steady and healthy growth. Sanima Bank reported NPR 2.35 billion in profit with a 42 percent increase, while Machhapuchchhre Bank earned NPR 1.65 billion, reflecting over 50 percent growth. Similarly, Citizens Bank, Siddhartha Bank, and NMB Bank have shown consistent improvement, highlighting balanced expansion and efficient banking operations across the sector.

The growth in profitability has been supported by improved operational efficiency, better cost management, and a noticeable decline in impairment charges. Many banks have reduced provisioning for potential loan losses, which has directly strengthened their bottom line. This also reflects gradual improvement in asset quality and stronger credit risk management practices within the banking system.

Liquidity conditions remain comfortable across the sector. With ample funds available, banks have been able to maintain stable credit-to-deposit ratios while preparing for future lending expansion. The gradual decline in interest rates has reduced the cost of funds, creating a more favorable environment for both borrowers and lenders.

Although a few banks have reported slight declines in profit, the overall sector trend remains strongly positive. Large and well-capitalized banks continue to provide stability, while improving mid-tier banks are driving growth momentum. This balanced performance has strengthened confidence among depositors and investors.

Looking ahead, banks are expected to focus on expanding digital banking services, increasing non-interest income, and improving lending quality. With improving financial indicators and a supportive liquidity environment, the banking sector appears to be moving toward a more stable and growth-oriented phase.

Overall, the third-quarter results highlight that Nepal’s banking sector is regaining strength, with rising profitability, improving efficiency, and a more resilient financial foundation.
