KATHMANDU — The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against a former employee of the Land Revenue Office on charges of illegally amassing wealth worth nearly Rs 100 million. Claiming that he amassed disproportionate property by abusing his authority, the anti-graft body registered a charge sheet at the Special Court against Yadunath Acharya, his wife, and a few others.
According to the CIAA's investigation, Acharya, who entered government service in 1998 (2054 BS), legitimately earned only Rs 62.5 million up to December 2023 (Mangsir 2080 BS). However, during the same period, his expenditures and investments in real estate, shares, vehicles, and other sectors exceeded Rs 159.8 million. As he failed to disclose the source of Rs 97.27 million, which was far beyond his legitimate income, the CIAA filed the case maintaining this amount as the principal misappropriated sum.
Investigations further revealed that Acharya employed various tactics to launder his illegally acquired wealth. While purchasing real estate in Kathmandu and Morang, he paid millions but quoted significantly lower transaction amounts on official government deeds. Furthermore, he was found investing in Halesi Department Store through his wife, Lalita Rajbhandari, conducting transactions via land brokers using third-party bank accounts, and rotating illicit money in the stock market. For his involvement in concealing and laundering these assets, a separate money laundering charge has been filed against him with an additional claim of Rs 91.9 million.
Stating that she was directly involved in managing the illicit wealth, the CIAA has sought punishment for Acharya's wife, Lalita, as a principal accomplice. Similarly, his daughters Niru and Saru have been named as defendants solely for the purpose of property confiscation, while two others (Prabha Basnet and Kumari Katuwal) have also been dragged into the money laundering offense. With the case now registered at the Special Court, the legal fate of the accused will be decided by the judiciary.
