Government Collects Over Rs 300 Million Capital Gains Tax from OTC Share Market

Kathmandu — The government has collected more than Rs 300 million in capital gains tax from share transactions conducted through the Over-the-Counter (OTC) market during the current fiscal year. According to Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), Rs 300.7 million in revenue was collected from OTC transactions until Ashar 5.

The largest contribution came from the trading of shares of PhonePay. The government collected Rs 183.5 million in capital gains tax from PhonePay’s share transaction alone, accounting for around 65.67 percent of the total revenue collected from the OTC market.

In Magh, 1.15 million units of PhonePay shares were traded at Rs 1,315 per share. The transaction, conducted at a significantly higher price than the face value of Rs 100 per share, generated a substantial amount of capital gains tax.

According to NEPSE data, the highest monthly capital gains tax collection from the OTC market was recorded in Magh at Rs 197.4 million, followed by Rs 88.7 million in Poush and Rs 74.2 million in Chaitra.

The OTC market’s revenue collection has largely been driven by a limited number of high-value transactions, with PhonePay’s share trading playing a major role in boosting activity this fiscal year.

Meanwhile, investors trading shares in the regular secondary market paid Rs 9.54 billion in capital gains tax to the government until Jestha of the current fiscal year. The amount is lower compared to the same period last year, when investors had paid Rs 15.27 billion.

The decline in the stock market has also reduced capital gains tax collection from secondary market transactions.

The OTC market is a platform operated for trading shares of companies that are not listed on NEPSE, have been removed from listing, or have failed to meet listing requirements. It was established to maintain liquidity in such securities and protect investor interests.
