Japan and South Korea Stock Markets Scale Historic Heights on AI Wave
Asian stock markets scripted history on Thursday, with Japan's Nikkei breaching the 70,000-point mark for the first time ever while South Korea's KOSPI surged past the 9,000-point threshold — both milestones that had never been reached before.
Japan's Nikkei Stock Average closed at 71,053.49 points, surging 1,151.24 points or 1.65 percent in a single session. The index has now gained approximately 41 percent since the start of the year, reflecting sustained investor confidence in the world's third-largest economy. The Bank of Japan's steady monetary policy stance has played a key role in reassuring markets that interest rate conditions remain favorable for equities.
South Korea's KOSPI delivered an even more dramatic performance, climbing 2.3 percent to close at 9,063.84 points. What makes the figure more striking is the scale of the rally — the index has more than doubled this year alone, posting a gain of approximately 115 percent since January. The index briefly crossed the 9,000-point level during intraday trading before holding above it at the close.
Taiwan's TAIEX also joined the rally, rising more than 1 percent on the day. The index has now climbed roughly 60 percent year-to-date, cementing Taiwan's position as one of Asia's strongest performing markets in 2025.
Analysts point to three converging forces behind the historic surge. Growing investor enthusiasm for artificial intelligence and related technologies has been the dominant driver, with semiconductor, technology, and AI-linked companies attracting particularly strong demand across the region. Optimism surrounding a potential US-Iran peace agreement has also eased geopolitical tensions that had weighed on global sentiment. Additionally, confidence in Japan's measured approach to monetary policy has provided a stable backdrop for continued market gains.
Looking ahead, market watchers expect the positive momentum across Asian equity markets to continue, provided that investment in AI technology keeps expanding and the international political environment remains relatively stable.
