Nepali Banks Strengthen Capital Base, Global IME Leads

Capital Status of Government-Owned Banks

Nepal's three major government-owned banks — Nepal Bank Limited, Rastriya Banijya Bank, and Agriculture Development Bank — have collectively maintained a total capital fund of Rs. 99,511 million. Among them, Agriculture Development Bank leads with Rs. 35,170 million, followed by Rastriya Banijya Bank with Rs. 32,376 million, and Nepal Bank Limited with Rs. 31,965 million. The stable capital structure of these government banks continues to bolster confidence in Nepal's overall banking system.

Strong Position of Private Sector Banks

Private sector banks have shown remarkable improvement in strengthening their capital bases. Global IME Bankstands at the top with a total capital fund of Rs. 64,925 million. It is closely followed by Nabil Bank Limited (Rs. 60,973 million) and Nepal Investment Mega Bank Limited (Rs. 60,619 million). The significant capital strength of these private banks positions them well to fund large infrastructure projects and support broader economic development.

Performance of Mid-Sized Banks

Banks such as Kumari Bank Limited (Rs. 43,060 million), Laxmi Sunrise Bank Limited (Rs. 42,431 million), Prabhu Bank Limited (Rs. 38,273 million), and NMB Bank Limited (Rs. 35,863 million) have also maintained healthy capital positions. These mid-sized banks are actively improving their competitiveness through mergers, acquisitions, and internal reforms to better position themselves in the evolving market.

Status of Foreign-Invested Banks

Foreign-invested banks such as Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Limited and Nepal SBI Bank Limited have shown comparatively lower capital figures, with Rs. 22,396 million and Rs. 23,425 million respectively. Although these banks maintain high-quality services and international operational standards, their capital base remains modest compared to their larger domestic competitors.

Condition of Small and Medium Banks

Small and medium-sized banks such as Machhapuchhre Bank Limited (Rs. 22,437 million), Siddhartha Bank Limited (Rs. 28,166 million), and Citizens Bank International Limited (Rs. 27,577 million) have been steadily building up their capital. These banks are focusing on internal management improvements and aggressive market strategies to maintain their position amid increasing competition.
