KATHMANDU — With the onset of the main tourist season (autumn), the influx of foreign tourists to Nepal has surged significantly. As favorable weather for trekking and mountaineering began, 132,814 foreign guests arrived by air in October alone, marking the highest monthly arrival for 2026. According to the Nepal Tourism Board, this brings the total number of foreign visitors in the first 10 months (January–October) of the current year to over 1 million, reaching exactly 1,008,616. This arrival figure represents a 3.4 percent increase compared to October 2025.
Surpassing neighboring India, which traditionally holds the top spot, the United States recorded the highest number of tourist arrivals this month. While 17,437 tourists (13.13 percent of the total arrivals) came from the US in October, the number of Indian visitors dropped by 30 percent to 12,097. Meanwhile, Chinese tourist arrivals saw a remarkable 73 percent growth, reaching 11,695. The number of tourists arriving from the UK, Australia, and Germany also witnessed healthy growth.
A region-wise analysis shows that the highest number of tourists this month—39,877—came from European countries. The tourism activities, which had somewhat slowed down during the monsoon, have regained vibrant momentum with the October arrivals. Having crossed the significant milestone of 1 million tourist arrivals in just 10 months, the influx during the remaining two months (November and December) will now be crucial in evaluating the overall tourism situation and annual targets for this year.
