The United States has announced a new policy regarding Green Card applications, requiring most immigrants to complete the process through U.S. embassies or consulates in their home countries instead of applying from within the United States. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the option to adjust immigration status while staying in the U.S. will be removed except in certain special cases. The move is being viewed as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to tighten control over illegal immigration. However, critics argue that the policy could create major difficulties for millions of immigrants, as lengthy processing times may separate families and create uncertainty about whether applicants will be allowed to return to the U.S. after leaving. A Green Card grants permanent residency, work authorization, and freedom to travel in the United States, although Green Card holders are not allowed to vote. The card is issued for 10 years and can later be renewed.
