Do Nepalis Need a Transit Visa for Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou?

Nepali travelers do not need a transit visa for Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou if their layover is under 24 hours and they remain inside the airport. For longer layovers or plans to exit the airport, a G-type Transit Visa is mandatory since Nepal is not eligible for the 144-hour or 240-hour visa-free policies. It is strongly advised to confirm flight routes and transit eligibility before travel. Yatra for Fun Pvt. Ltd. provides full assistance with visa processing, documentation, and itinerary planning for travelers transiting through China.

Do Nepalis Need a Transit Visa for Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou?

For Nepali citizens transiting through major Chinese airports such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, the need for a transit visa depends primarily on the duration of stay and intention to leave the airport. China has introduced a 24-hour visa-free transit policy that applies to almost all nationalities, including Nepali passport holders, making short layovers simpler and more convenient.

If a Nepali traveler has a confirmed onward ticket to a third country and the transit duration is less than 24 hours, then no transit visa is required, as long as the traveler remains inside the international transit area of the airport. For example, a flight from Kathmandu to Seoul via Beijing or from Kathmandu to Tokyo via Guangzhou qualifies for this 24-hour visa-free transit policy. Travelers in such cases can stay inside the airport waiting area and do not need to apply for a G-type (Transit) Visa.

However, Nepali travelers cannot use the extended 144-hour or 240-hour visa-free transit programs, as these longer visa exemptions are available only to citizens of about 55 specific countries, mostly from Europe, North America, and Oceania. As of 2025, Nepal is not listed among the eligible nationalities for these extended visa-free policies. Therefore, if a Nepali citizen wants to stay in China for more than 24 hours or exit the airport, they must apply for a Transit Visa (G Visa) in advance through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) in Rising Mall, Kamaladi, Kathmandu.

The required documents for a G Visa include a valid Nepali passport (minimum 6 months validity), a passport-sized photo, a confirmed flight ticket to a third country, and if applicable, proof of visa for the next destination. The processing time is typically 4–5 working days, with express options available.

For travelers with shorter layovers under 24 hours, Beijing Capital International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport all have international transit zones, allowing passengers to rest, dine, and connect flights without passing through Chinese immigration. However, passengers must ensure that their entire journey is booked under one ticket and that the airlines handle baggage transfers automatically to avoid re-entry issues.

For complete visa guidance, itinerary consultation, and documentation support, Yatra for Fun Pvt. Ltd., located at Koteshwor-32, Kathmandu, offers professional assistance for Nepali travelers flying through China — including Transit, Tourist, Business, Medical, and Student Visa processing.
