Government Releases Rs 6.31 Billion for Election Preparations, Total Allocation Reaches Rs 19.15 Billion

The government has moved forward with financial preparations for upcoming parliamentary elections by approving budgetary resources worth Rs 19.15 billion for election management in the current fiscal year 2082/83. According to the Ministry of Finance, Rs 6.31 billion has already been released to concerned institutions, indicating that election-related activities have entered an active implementation phase.

The allocation covers the management of elections to both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly. Officials say the funds are being released in stages to ensure smoother coordination, effective use of public money, and closer monitoring of election-related expenditures. The phased approach also reflects the scale and complexity of managing national elections across the country.

The Election Commission has emerged as the primary recipient of funds released so far. The Finance Ministry approved Rs 4.96 billion in mid-November, followed by an additional Rs 1.77 billion in late December, bringing the total disbursement to Rs 6.31 billion. These funds are intended to support voter registration, polling logistics, staffing, ballot materials, and administrative preparations.

Security-related agencies have also received targeted allocations. The National Investigation Department was provided Rs 280 million to strengthen intelligence coordination and security monitoring during the election period. This allocation reflects heightened sensitivity around election security, particularly in managing misinformation, internal threats, and election-related disruptions.

The Nepali Army has been allocated funds for both equipment procurement and operational expenses. The ministry released Rs 44.25 million for the purchase of election-related equipment, while an additional Rs 1.94 billion was approved to cover operational costs linked to election security and logistical support. Analysts note that this dual allocation suggests an emphasis on preparedness as well as deployment capacity.

The largest share of the approved budget has been allocated to the Ministry of Home Affairs and its subordinate bodies. A total of Rs 10.39 billion has been earmarked for managing House of Representatives elections, covering security personnel deployment, transportation, communications, and administrative coordination. The scale of this allocation highlights the central role of the home ministry in maintaining order during elections.

For the National Assembly elections, the Election Commission has received a separate allocation of Rs 43.18 million. Though comparatively small, the amount is aimed at ensuring parallel preparations for the upper house election without diverting resources from the larger parliamentary polls.

Officials at the Finance Ministry say that the approval of source agreements and fund releases is designed to promote transparency and accountability in public spending. By linking disbursements to specific institutions and timelines, the ministry aims to reduce fiscal bottlenecks and ensure that election preparations are not delayed due to financial constraints.

Policy observers note that while the budget allocation signals administrative readiness, effective oversight will be crucial in the coming months. With election spending often under public scrutiny, the way these funds are utilized will play an important role in shaping public confidence in the electoral process.

As election preparations gain momentum, attention is now shifting to whether the allocated resources translate into timely logistics, credible security arrangements, and a smooth voting process. The government’s ability to manage both finances and execution will be closely watched by voters, political parties, and civil society alike.
