Thailand MT Visa Requirements — Hospital Letter, Financial Proof, Stay

The Thailand Medical Tourist (MT) Visa is a special visa type designed for individuals who wish to visit Thailand for medical treatment, surgery, rehabilitation, or wellness purposes. For Nepali citizens, this visa allows legal entry into Thailand for treatment at approved hospitals or clinics. The Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu accepts MT visa applications for genuine medical cases supported by hospital documentation and sufficient financial proof. This visa is particularly beneficial for patients who need short-term medical procedures such as dental surgery, cosmetic operations, orthopedic or cardiac treatment, or specialized therapy.

The most important requirement for the MT visa is the official hospital appointment or confirmation letter. The applicant must first contact a recognized hospital in Thailand and obtain this document before submitting a visa application. The hospital letter should be written on the institution’s official letterhead and include the applicant’s full name, passport number, diagnosis or medical condition, planned treatment details, estimated duration, and attending doctor’s signature. Hospitals like Bumrungrad International, Samitivej, Bangkok Hospital, and Vejthani Hospitalregularly issue such letters for foreign patients, including Nepalis. Along with the letter, the applicant must also include their medical reports and test results from Nepal, such as lab tests, scans, prescriptions, and referral letters translated into English. This documentation confirms the authenticity of the medical reason for travel.

Another key requirement is financial proof, which demonstrates that the applicant can afford medical expenses, accommodation, and return travel. The Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu generally requires a bank statement of the last six months showing adequate funds. As a guideline, applicants should maintain at least THB 20,000 (approximately NPR 80,000) for a single traveler and THB 40,000 (approximately NPR 160,000) for a family application. Supporting documents like salary slips, income certificates, property ownership proof, or a solvency letter from the bank can strengthen the visa application further. The embassy may request additional financial documents if the treatment cost is high.

Applicants must also show proof of accommodation in Thailand during the treatment period. This may include a hotel reservation, hospital accommodation letter, or relative’s address. A confirmed round-trip flight ticket must also be submitted to demonstrate the intention to return after the treatment. The MT visa is generally valid for three months from the date of issue, and upon entry, it allows the holder to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days. If the treatment requires a longer period, an extension can be requested at the Thai Immigration Bureau, supported by a new medical recommendation from the treating hospital. Hospitals in Thailand usually assist patients with visa extensions if needed.

It’s important to note that all submitted documents, including financial proofs and hospital letters, must be clear, valid, and consistent with the information in the applicant’s passport. Discrepancies in name, date of birth, or travel dates can delay the visa process. The Royal Thai Embassy takes around 7 to 10 working days to process MT visa applications, but it may take longer if verification with the hospital is required. Applicants are therefore advised to apply at least three weeks before the planned travel date.

For Nepali patients, the easiest way to manage this process is through Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., Nepal’s leading visa and travel assistance company. Yatra For Fun directly coordinates with Thailand’s top hospitals to obtain official hospital letters, review documents, and submit the complete visa file to the Royal Thai Embassy. The company also provides consultation for post-treatment visa extensions, travel arrangements, and insurance coverage.
