Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle has arrived in the United States with the primary objective of securing international financial assistance for the reconstruction of the flood-ravaged Bhote Koshi region.
Upon his arrival in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Minister Wagle is scheduled to hold high-level bilateral talks starting Monday. According to the Ministry of Finance, he will meet with World Bank President Ajay Banga and US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. The discussions will heavily focus on funding sustainable rebuilding efforts for the damaged infrastructure and strengthening the broader Nepal-US economic partnership.
A critical and highly sensitive agenda of the visit is Nepal's urgent effort to avert being placed on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) ‘grey list’. With the growing risk of being blacklisted due to weak regulatory frameworks and legal loopholes—particularly in the cooperative sector—the government recently introduced a five-point reform plan. Minister Wagle is expected to brief the World Bank and other international agencies on these governance reforms to assure them of Nepal's commitment to financial transparency.
Additionally, the visit aims to attract foreign direct investment into large-scale infrastructure projects, such as road networks and hydropower transmission lines, to boost domestic employment. To achieve this, Wagle is slated to meet with top officials from the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) as well as prominent private American investors, urging them to mobilize capital in Nepal's developmental sectors.
