काठमाडौं — पोखरा अन्तरराष्ट्रिय विमानस्थलको इतिहासमा एउटा नयाँ अध्याय थपिन लागेको छ। फ्लाई दुबईले आउँदो सेप्टेम्बर २३ देखि पोखरा र दुबईबीच दैनिक सिधा उडान सञ्चालन थाल्ने भएको छ। नेपाल नागरिक उड्डयन प्राधिकरणले उडानको अनुमति दिइसकेको छ र कम्पनीको टोलीले विमानस्थलको सुरक्षा तथा सञ्चालन अवस्थाको स्थलगत निरीक्षण पनि सकिसकेको छ।
यो अनुमति आउनुलाई सरकारको नीतिगत पहलको छिटो नतिजाका रूपमा हेरिएको छ। सरकारले आगामी आर्थिक वर्ष २०८३–८४ को नीति तथा कार्यक्रममा पोखरा विमानस्थलमा विदेशी वायुसेवा भित्र्याउन कूटनीतिक प्रयास गर्ने भनेको थियो। त्यो घोषणा भएको धेरै समय नबित्दै यो अनुमति प्राप्त हुनु उत्साहजनक संकेत मानिएको छ।
सन् २०२३ को सुरुमा उद्घाटन भएको पोखरा विमानस्थल करिब २२ अर्ब रुपैयाँ ऋणमा बनेको हो। उद्घाटनयता यो विमानस्थल आन्तरिक उडानमा मात्रै थुनिएको थियो। चार्टर उडान कहिलेकाहीँ हुने गरे पनि नियमित अन्तरराष्ट्रिय उडान भने कहिल्यै स्थापित हुन सकेन। सन् २०२५ मार्चमा हिमालय एयरलाइन्सले पोखरा–ल्हासा उडान सुरु गरेको थियो तर एक वर्ष नपुग्दै त्यो सेवा बन्द भयो।
पोखरा पर्यटन व्यवसायीहरूका लागि यो खबर लामो प्रतीक्षाको अन्त्य हो। विमानस्थल बनेपछि पोखरामा पर्यटन पूर्वाधारमा झण्डै एक खर्ब रुपैयाँको लगानी थपिएको छ। तर अन्तरराष्ट्रिय जडान नहुँदा त्यो लगानीले अपेक्षित फल दिन सकेको थिएन।
व्यवसायीहरूको माग अझै पूर्ण भएको छैन। उनीहरू भारत र चीनका प्रमुख सहरमा पनि नियमित उडान जोड्न नेपाली वायुसेवा कम्पनीहरूलाई अनुमति दिनुपर्ने र नीतिगत अवरोध हटाउनुपर्ने भन्दै आएका छन्। तैपनि फ्लाई दुबईको यो उडानले ५० वर्षको पुरानो सपनालाई यथार्थमा बदल्ने र पोखरालाई अन्तरराष्ट्रिय हवाई नक्सामा राख्ने पहिलो कदम बन्ने अपेक्षा राखिएको छ।
Kathmandu — A new chapter is about to begin for Pokhara International Airport. FlyDubai has announced it will launch daily direct flights between Pokhara and Dubai starting September 23. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has already granted the necessary permits, and a FlyDubai team has completed an on-site inspection of the airport's safety, security, and operational readiness.
The approval is being seen as a quick result of the government's policy push. The government had pledged in its policy and programme for the upcoming fiscal year 2082/83 to pursue diplomatic efforts to attract international airlines to Pokhara. The permit arriving so soon after that announcement has been welcomed as an encouraging sign.
Pokhara International Airport was inaugurated in January 2023 at a cost of nearly Rs 22 billion, largely financed through loans. Since opening, it has been confined to domestic operations. Apart from occasional charter flights, no regular international service ever took hold. Himalaya Airlines launched a Pokhara to Lhasa route in March 2025, but that service was discontinued within a year.
For tourism businesses in Pokhara, long regarded as Nepal's tourist capital, the news brings relief after a prolonged wait. Nearly Rs 100 billion in new investment has poured into Pokhara's tourism infrastructure since the airport was built. Business owners say that without international air connectivity, much of that investment has failed to generate the returns they had hoped for.
Demands from the business community go further still. They have been calling on the government to allow Nepali carriers to operate regular flights to major cities in India and China, and to ease the regulatory hurdles that have held back international connectivity. Even so, FlyDubai's upcoming service is being celebrated as the first concrete step toward realising a dream that has been five decades in the making.
