Nepal Electricity Authority Secures Approval to Export Additional 35 MW Power to India

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has received approval to export an additional 35 megawatts of electricity to India, further expanding Nepal’s energy trade with its southern neighbor. India’s Designated Authority, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), granted the export permission on Mangsir 16.

With this approval, NEA will now export electricity generated from two hydropower projects:

  • Seti River Hydropower Project – 24.25 MW

  • Upper Tadi Khola Hydropower Project – 10.70 MW

The electricity will be traded in India’s competitive power market (Indian Energy Exchange – IEX). This new approval has increased Nepal’s total electricity export capacity to India to 1,200 MW, according to NEA.

In addition to India, Nepal has been exporting 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh from two hydropower projects. During the recent bilateral meeting held in Bangladesh, the two countries reached a new understanding to export an additional 20 MW of electricity, further strengthening regional energy cooperation.

The NEA stated that increasing hydropower production and expanding cross-border power trade mechanisms have allowed Nepal to diversify its electricity market and enhance long-term energy revenue prospects.
