Commercial Banks Keep Deposit Rates Mostly Stable as Excess Liquidity Continues

Commercial banks in Nepal have mostly kept deposit interest rates unchanged for Jestha 2083, even though a few banks slightly reduced rates. The latest data published by the Nepal Bankers’ Association shows that banks are no longer aggressively competing for deposits as liquidity in the banking system remains high and loan demand continues to stay weak.

According to the data, the average maximum interest rate for individual deposits fell from 4.40 percent in Baishakh to 4.343 percent in Jestha. Institutional deposit rates also declined slightly from 3.22 percent to 3.20 percent. While the decrease is small, it clearly shows that the banking sector is still moving in a low interest rate environment.

Among the 20 commercial banks operating in Nepal, most banks decided to continue the same interest rates from the previous month. However, a few banks reduced rates for both individual and institutional deposits. NMB Bank, NIC Asia Bank, Himalayan Bank, Nepal Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Kumari Bank all lowered individual deposit rates to some extent.

NIC Asia Bank, Himalayan Bank and Nepal Bank reduced individual deposit rates by 0.25 percentage points, which was one of the biggest cuts this month. NMB Bank also reduced its rate by 0.20 percentage points, although it still offers the highest individual deposit rate in the market at 4.8 percent.

On the other hand, Siddhartha Bank slightly increased its individual deposit rate by 0.05 percentage points. This was the only bank to increase rates for individual depositors during the month.

In the institutional deposit segment, Citizens Bank International increased rates by 0.50 percentage points, making one of the few positive changes in the market. However, Kumari Bank and Standard Chartered Bank reduced institutional deposit rates significantly.

The data also shows that banks are currently comfortable with liquidity. Remittance inflow into the country remains strong, deposits are increasing and loan demand has not grown as expected. Because of this, banks do not feel pressure to offer higher returns to attract depositors.

Banking experts say the weak demand for loans is one of the main reasons behind stable or falling deposit rates. Many businesses are still cautious about borrowing due to slow economic activity and weak market confidence. As a result, banks are holding large amounts of unused money inside the financial system.

For savers, however, the situation is becoming more difficult. Deposit rates are slowly falling while inflation is gradually increasing again. This means the real return from keeping money in banks is becoming lower. Because of this, some investors may start looking at alternative investment options such as the stock market, mutual funds or real estate.

For now, the latest interest rate figures suggest that Nepal’s banking sector remains in a liquidity-rich but credit-weak situation. Unless demand for loans improves strongly in the coming months, banks are unlikely to increase deposit rates significantly anytime soon.
